The Storms, live in the Star Club, Karlsruhe, Germany, 1965.
All tracks recorded d.i.y. in a noisy, smokey club, with just one microphone into a Grundig reel-to-reel tape recorder, and copied from that 1/4-inch tape to a CD-recorder several decades later, and eventually uploaded to the 'net by connecting a guitar-lead (!) from a cheap CD-player to a laptop and eventually to YouTube ..considering this extremely dodgy history of production, the quality is to me, not too bad. Whatever, this page gives a good idea of how a travelling British rock-group sounded on an average night in a small club in a provincial town on the German-French border. Just one more gig in the mid-60s.
( Johnny Kidd, and The Pirates related tracks in Upper Case.)
SHAKIN' ALL OVER ( later version ) the brief bit of Radio1 goes away quickly! >

Lyrics ( paul acourt )
"There's an empty place..in our line...which nobody else can fill...but that voice lives on...it always will...it gives me the same old chills...it gives me that old-time thrill...
You always made me laugh-out-loud...i'm gonna miss that smile...you sang with heart to so many crowds...they're gonna miss you style....We drove down so many roads back then...and even crossed the sea...you stood up front on every stage...never knowing how it would be...
Oh i know...there's gonna be.. gonna be tears... naturally...sadness, shock...and disbelieving....You feel numb...it's not real....you don't wanna think....don't wanna feel....your heart will truly heal....only after grieving....only after grieving...
Just normal boys from the neighbourhood...with an amazing dream...to leave behind all they understood...to be part of the scene...don't know how we did all those shows....through the night 'til the light of day...it was love for the life...and the soul of a band...and you made it easy to play...
Oh i know...
So many nights to make that groove...brothers on the move...side-by-side...day and night...nothing left to prove...Families dream of what we've seen....it's so close on the road....looking back now...through all the years...there's so much you are owed...
Oh i know...
You always made me laugh out loud....i'm gonna miss that smile...you sang with heart to so many crowds...they're gonna miss your style....We drove down so many roads back then...and even crossed the sea....you stood up front on every stage...never knowing how it would be....never knowing how it would be...
There's an empty place...in our line....which nobody else can fill...but that voice lives on....it always will...it gives me the same cold chills...it gives me, that old-time thrill...."

That truly is dodgy! :D
ReplyDeleteStill, analog fascinates me. We all wax eloquent about how digital is awesome, but it was analog for so long & it still sounds pretty awesome!
Wish i could have been there to scream a bit...wasn't born though ! Great live sound - so real...good to dance to!
ReplyDeleteYeah - a band that would have made an amazing studio album if they'd had the chance
